  • SPI Ghoulish Trail

This trip took place last Saturday 30 May 2009.

The journey commenced at about 10.30pm and ended at about 4am.

There were in total about 9 participants, including myself. Plus another 2 YEC members of mine - Nicholas and Grace.

Initially, as organiser, I am supposed to get 15 participants. There were 10 of us but among the 3 malays joining us, the daughter decided to withdraw from participating in the activity at the last moment. Nevertheless there were the father and his son. They are family members of NSC CC MAEC Committee Member Dahlia. In addition, there were 2 foreigners joining us - A lady from China and her female friend from San Diego, USA. Not forgetting the 3 SPI guides who joined us.

While on the bus using the microphone throughout the entire trip, one of the SPI guides explained and shared on the beliefs of various races/religions about end of life journey and passing on into the spiritual realm, and why ghosts/souls still linger on earth after death (for example: those who committed suicides). He also generously shared experiences about the scientific experiments conducted to assess certain paranormal sightings, in Singapore or overseas, e.g: Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

About the Dish Spirit, so on and so forth. Also shared the common paranormal occurences experienced by people in Singapore and overseas. Generally speaking, from a neutral and scientific perspective, they somehow felt that ghosts are negative energies, of which presences can be felt by some of us who may have that pyschic ability, be it seeing or feeling "them".

For example: you may feel an unusually chilling breeze brushing across you..temperature suddenly become quite cold.

At cemetries, we visited few unique tombs like the Lion Tomb. The SPI guide went to great lengths to explain the significance behind the construction of these chinese tombs.

Taking a walk in Bukit Brown Cemetry or Lim Chu Kang Cemetry, to me, it feels like walking the road to the Underworld. :p

Some of us did carry some torches. Thanks to the urbanised landscape in Singapore, cemetries aren't really dark due to the nearby city lights which lit up the clouds at night.

There was only 1 ghost-calling experiement conducted at Lim Chu Kang Cemetry, about 2am in the morning. I was one of 4 bold volunteers to do that. Although I'm scared, I was the first one to volunteer. Because I knew that if I don't volunteer myself, the other 3 volunteers will not step forward!

Grace stepped forward. Plus the American lady and another chinese guy.

We sat facing one another in a square.

Under the guidance of the 3 SPI guides, we did a 10-minute "soul-calling" experiment at a dark narrow road. The SPI guides said some prayers, made some incense offerings and tossed paper money into the air.

Can you imagine we doing this, breaking the heavy silence across the dark Lim Chu Kang Cemetry in the wee hours of the morning. Yeah, talking about waking up the dead..lol :p

3 other volunteers used a chopstick to knock on their rice-bowls. According to chinese, especially in the olden days of Singapore, this act literally means: "Time for Meal! Time for Dinner!!!!!"

Wheras I played the chinese abacus and the mirror. Spirtually speaking, the abacus is a medium which determines your Life Destiny - your past, present and future. The mirror is another one medium which is said to be able to capture "unusual images which our naked eye can't see".

While the other 3 guys kept on hitting the rice bowl, I was supposed to hit the abacus 7 times using my left hand, followed by holding up the small mirror using my right hand, swaying from left to right to left again 7 times, to see if I do see anything behind me.

The rest of the participants and SPI guides walked away to a far spot to observe us from a distance. OMG! *Faint*

The people who hit the rice-bowl became bored. However yes, I was 'lucky' to see something!

5 minutes or so later, through the reflections of the mirror, I noticed that there was a fade greenish-white figure standing behind....far away from me.............I can sense that it is a harmless "spirit".

Can't figure out it is a male or female.

Call me crazy, I became bolder and hit the abacus louder, to see if it gets near me.

    Did it get near me?

The answer is "NO". It stays there at its spot.

Hmmmm.......could it be due to the amulet which I carried with me, I wondered. Well, it could also possibly be my eyes playing tricks on me due to tiredness or whatever.

I did not tell the rest ( which includes those 3 volunteers who were hitting the rice-bowl) until the experiment was over.

Why? Because I've read in somewhere before that I should not say things like "I've seen it!" verbally to the 3 volunteers. Because there are "invisible ghosts" around us. If you say that, the ghosts will know that you are able to see it..and thus will follow you. Furthermore, I do not want to create any panic.

I do not know whether is this true or not. But anyway as a precaution, I acted normal and only shared what I've seen with others while on the bus journey to the next spot. Hahaha...yeah, the other participants and the SPI guides bugged me, asked me questions in a hush-hush tone manner : "Yoz, did you see anything? What is that something which you saw?"

To sums up, this SPI Ghoulish Trail activity is truly an "unforgettable", refreshing experience for all participants involved.

(P.s: If you wish to see photos, sorry. None! Due to the nature of the above activity, although I did bring along my digital camera, I dare not take any photos.)
